(Manis crassicaudata)
(Manis pentadactyla)
Sangtam Resolution Boosts Pangolin Protection in Nagaland
In a significant step toward combating wildlife trafficking along the India–Myanmar border, the apex body of Nagaland’s Sangtam community has adopted a resolution to protect pangolins within its jurisdiction.
The initiative applies to Kiphire and Tuensang districts, known transit routes for illegal wildlife trade near the Myanmar border.
Why It Matters
Pangolins are the world’s most trafficked wild mammals, targeted for their scales and meat in international markets.
The 1,643-km India–Myanmar border has become a major corridor for smuggling pangolins from Northeast India.
Community-Led Conservation
The resolution was passed by the United Sangtam Likhum Pumji, the apex organisation of the Sangtam tribe.
Conservationists have described it as a milestone under the Countering Pangolin Trafficking Project led by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), supported by the Pangolin Crisis Fund of the Wildlife Conservation Network.
The project focuses on:
• Community engagement
• Reducing illegal trade
• Strengthening enforcement coordination
Biodiversity at Stake
The Sangtam region is part of the Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity Hotspot — a globally significant ecological zone rich in forests and wildlife but vulnerable to poaching networks.
Earlier, similar action was taken by the Tangkhul Naga Awunga Long in Manipur, showing growing grassroots resistance against wildlife crime.
🌎 Strengthening Anti-Trafficking Efforts
By aligning traditional governance structures with scientific conservation strategies, the Sangtam initiative demonstrates how indigenous leadership can play a pivotal role in protecting endangered species and combating transnational wildlife crime.
