Tamil-Brahmi Inscriptions Found in Egyptian Tombs
Powerful Evidence of Tamilagam–Roman Connections in the Early Centuries CE
History has surprised us once again!
A groundbreaking discovery in the Theban Necropolis of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings has revealed nearly 30 inscriptions dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE — written in Tamil-Brahmi, Prakrit, and Sanskrit.
These short graffiti inscriptions suggest that merchants or travelers from ancient Tamilagam reached Egypt during the Roman period.
One name — “Chikai Koṟṟaṉ” — appears eight times across five different tombs! The term “Koṟṟaṉ” relates to the Tamil root meaning victory or valor, deeply connected with early Tamil warrior culture.
Earlier, the name “Koṟṟapuman” had also been discovered on pottery at Berenike, a major Red Sea port linking India and the Roman Empire.
Why This Matters:
• Evidence of active Indo-Roman maritime trade
• Indian presence beyond port cities into the Nile Valley
• Cultural exchange, movement of people, and shared sacred spaces
• Strong proof of early globalization
This discovery deepens our understanding of ancient intercontinental networks connecting Tamilagam, Northwestern India, Egypt, and the Roman Empire.
