First Global Map of Rare Continental Mantle Earthquakes

In a major breakthrough, Stanford University researchers have created the first global map of rare continental mantle earthquakes, opening a new window into understanding Earth’s deep interior.

This discovery is highly relevant for UPSC Prelims & Mains (GS Paper I – Geophysics, Earthquakes).

🌋 What Are Continental Mantle Earthquakes?

Unlike most earthquakes that originate in the Earth’s crust (10–29 km depth), mantle earthquakes occur much deeper — sometimes more than 80 km below the Mohorovičić Discontinuity (Moho).

🔎 Key Features:

🔹 Occur deep inside the continental mantle
🔹 Located far below the Moho boundary
🔹 Do not cause significant surface shaking
🔹 Help scientists understand Earth’s internal structure

🌎 What is the Mohorovičić Discontinuity (Moho)?

  • It is the boundary between the Earth’s crust and the mantle.
  • Discovered by Croatian seismologist Andrija Mohorovičić (1909).
  • Separates the brittle crust from the warmer, semi-solid mantle.

📌 Why Is This Important?

✔ Provides new insights into earthquake generation mechanisms
✔ Helps understand tectonic plate behavior deep inside Earth
✔ Enhances knowledge about lithosphere–asthenosphere interactions
✔ Important for geophysical mapping and seismic studies

Even though these earthquakes do not cause serious surface damage, they are extremely important for understanding the dynamic processes of Earth’s interior.

📚 UPSC Relevance

🔹 GS Paper I – Physical Geography (Earth Structure, Earthquakes)
🔹 Prelims – Layers of Earth, Moho, Seismic Waves
🔹 Disaster Management – Understanding seismic processes

Understanding deep Earth processes strengthens conceptual clarity for both Prelims and Mains.

(Mohorovičić Discontinuity)

🔹 GS Paper I – भौतिक भूगोल
